Mobile Device Management - AirWatch for Android

Following are the steps necessary to register and enroll a Google Android device with the University's AirWatch Mobile Device Management system. Should you have any questions or experience issues following this document, please contact the Service Desk at (210) 567-7777.

Preparation

If you have never used your Android device to access your University e-mail, please proceed to Step 1. Otherwise, please perform the following steps prior to beginning the AirWatch installation and enrollment process.

  1. Open up your University e-mail that is set up on your device
  2. Locate and open settings, then tap Account Settings
  3. Tap the trash can and check the box on the account you want to delete
  4. Tap the OK button on the warning that pops up, then press your home key

NOTE: Due to the many versions of Android, the process explained above could vary from device to device. The process above should work for Android version 4.4.2 (Kit Kat).

  1. On your mobile device, open your web browser and go to http://awagent.com. Tap the button which reads Download AirWatch MDM Agent from the Google Play Store.
  2. You may be prompted to select an app to complete the action.  Select “Play Store”. Once you’re at the Google Play Store, tap the green INSTALL button to install the AirWatch MDM Agent. You’ll see the permissions the app needs in order to run.  Tap the “Accept” button and the AirWatch MDM Agent will begin installing.
  3. Once the AirWatch MDM Agent has installed, tap the blue OPEN button to continue.
  4. The AirWatch MDM Agent app will run. Select the “Email Address” authentication method. Touch the empty field to display your keyboard and enter your University email address (user@example.com). Tap the Continue button.
  5. You will now see the Welcome to AirWatch screen. Tap the Continue button.
  6. The next screen will ask for your University username and password. Once you’ve entered these, tap Continue. Your device will then authenticate with the network.
  7. You must now specify your device type. Tap the grey down arrow on the right of your screen to see and make your selection. Your choices are:
    • Corporate - Dedicated: This device was purchased and is owned by the University. The device is used exclusively for Health Science Center business.
    • Employee Owned: This device was purchased and is owned by you. The device is primarily used for your personal business, but will occasionally be used for University business.
    Once you have made your selection, tap the Continue button.
  8. You will then be presented with the University's Terms of Use. You will need to scroll in order to read the entire document. Once you have read the terms of use, tap the Accept or Decline button. If you decline the terms of use, your device will not be registered or enrolled, and you will not be allowed to conduct University business on the device; i.e., you will not have access to e-mail using the device.
  9. Once the terms of use have been accepted, you’ll see the Activation Successful! screen. Tap the Continue button to proceed.
  10. You’ll see a few screens that deal with activating the device administrator.  Accepting this will allow AirWatch to manage your device.  Managing means wiping the device to factory settings, enterprise wipe of just enterprise data, changing passcodes, monitor unlock attempts, etc.  This has to be accepted to use AirWatch to access to University resources such as e-mail. Tap Get Started. AirWatch informs you it needs to be the device administrator. Tap Continue. Tap Activate to grant permissions to AirWatch to manage your device. After the device administrator install, you will see the “Install Enterprise Service” screen.  Tap the Continue button.
    • Samsung devices may be presented with a few more black permission screens.  This is to install AirWatch Samsung Services.  If applicable, tap Next.
    • Samsung devices may be presented with a few more black permission screens.  This is to install AirWatch Samsung Services.  If applicable, tap Activate.
  11. You should now be presented with the “Create Single Sign-On Passcode” screen.  Follow the on-screen instructions to create your passcode then tap the Submit button. After tapping the Submit button, you will see that you have successfully completed authentication and securing your device. Tap the Continue button to proceed.
  12. You should now see the “Install Applications” screen.  You can install the apps presented here or choose to skip the installs for now.  You will have the ability to install apps once the setup process is completed. At this point, you have completed the initial configuration for your device.  Tap the Exit button. The AirWatch Agent will now display its informational screen.  This displays several pieces of information such as Device Status, Profiles pushed to your device, and a Managed Apps menu option.  Managed Apps is where you can go to install apps you may have skipped during the configuration phase of the install. Apps that are available for install will be labeled “Tap to Install Application”. Apps that are installed will have a version number or nothing beneath the name. Be sure to check the “Notifications” tab for final configuration alerts. This should conclude your AirWatch installation process.
