Enable Cookies: Tools > Internet Options > Privacy > Advanced > Check "Override Automatic Cookie Handling (Accept first party; Prompt third party)" and check the option to always accept session cookies > OK
Enable Java: Tools > Internet Options > Advanced Tab > scroll down to Java (Sun) and check the box next to “Use XXX X.X for <applet> (required restart)" > OK > back to browser and restart the computer
Enable Javascript: Tools > Internet Options > Security Tab > Custom Level > Scroll down to "Scripting," and enable "Active Scripting," "Allow Programmatic clipboard access," "Allow status bar updates via script," and, "Scripting of Java Applets" > OK
Enable Status bar: View > Toolbars > Check "Status Bar"
Get New Page Each Visit: Tools > Internet Options > General Tab > Browser history section select "Settings" > select "Every I visit the web page." OK
Trusted Sites: Tools > Internet Options / Security tab / click "Trusted sites" (checkmark icon) / click Sites button > type: *.uthscsa.edu > click Add button / click Close button / click OK button
Display Secure and Non-secure Items: Tools > Internet Options > Security tab > Under "Select a Zone" select Internet > Custom Level > scroll to Miscellaneous heading > Display mixed content > Enable > OK. Click Yes at the prompt "Are you sure you want to change the security settings..." > OK
Pop-up Blocker Settings: Tools > Pop-up Blocker > Pop-up Blocker Settings ... > type: *.uthscsa.edu >click Add button / click Cloclick Close button
Clear Cache/Delete Browsing History: Tools > click on Delete Browsing History > Select Temporary Internet Files > Click Delete button.

Note: If you want the browser to automatically clear the cache whenever you close it, click Tools > Internet Options / Advanced tab. Under Security, check the box next to the "Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed" option. Click OK. This will delete everything except cookies.


Mozilla Firefox
(PC and Mac)

For Mac OS X browsers, access preferences via the Application Menu (ex. Firefox > Preferences [look through tabs]).

For PCs:

Enable Cookies: Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies > select “Accept cookies from sites.” > OK

Enable Java: Tools > Options > Content > check the “Enable Java” box > OK -or- Tools > Add-ons > select Plugins > Java (TM) Platform - click Enable button

Enable Javascript: Tools > Options > Content > check the “Enable Javascript” box > OK

Get new page each visit: Tools > Options > Privacy > History: select “Remember history.” > OK

Popup Blocker Settings: Tools > Options > Content > Click the “Exceptions” button next to Block Pop-up Windows > Add *.uthscsa.edu > Click Allow and Close > OK

Clear Browser Cache for 1.5 / 2.0 / 3.0: Tools > Options > Privacy > Private Data > click "Clear Now" button > OK

Clear Browser Cache for 3.5 or greater: Tools > Clear Recent History > Choose time range > Click Details and make sure Cache is checked. > Select "Clear Now" button


Apple Mac Safari 5
(Mac Only)

Safari 5 not supported by University

All Settings: Safari Menu > Preferences > click Security icon > Check: Enable Plugins, Java, & Javascript > Clear checkbox on "Block Popup Windows" > Accept Cookies > select "Only From Sites I visit"

Empty Cache: Click Safari menu > Select Empty Cache > Click Empty

NOTE: Safari users may need to disable the Visual Text Box Editor in Blackboard if they encounter problems with text boxes.

My Blackboard > Tools > Personal Information > Set Visual Text Box Editor Options > select "Unavailable" > Submit

NOTE: Chrome is not currently supported with Blackboard CE, we reccomend one of the browsers listed above.
    Memory: If possible, max out memory:
  • Recommendations for PC: mininum of 1gb ram;
  • Recommendations for MACs: minimum of 2gb ram (also be sure you are up-to-date on all Software updates).
