Email Distribution Lists and ListServ

Distributing email on a large scale is possible in three ways:

  • Distribution lists: Targets specific ad-hoc segments of the university community.
  • Listserv: An email software application that lets one sender send mail to many people.
  • Broadcast lists: Sends mass email to large groups of campus constituents.

A description of each of these options is below.  If you’re not sure which option you need, contact the IMS-Service Desk for further assistance.

Distribution lists can send email to select groups of recipients.  There is no charge for a distribution list.  Owners must have a valid university email account.
Request Instructions: Submit a Service Request Form with the following details:

  • Preferred list name (one word, 3-16 characters); this will be the first part of the e-mail address
  • Full list title
  • Description of the list
  • Email address of owner(s)
  • Other settings will be coordinated directly with the requestor

Listservs are available for persons who want mailing lists containing persons both inside and outside the university. A list owner can maintain members of the group and control their privileges. Threaded discussions are possible. Lists may be private or public. Here is a sampling of university lists
List users may send from a web log-in to the application or with their own email software. There is a one-time set-up fee of $50. Owners must have a valid university email account.
